Located right between the collectors and the catalytic converters in the exhaust system, downpipes are an important and simple modification for any 2009-2014 EcoBoost Ford F-150 owner that is looking to release more high end horsepower. Ford F-150 headers scavenge better than a manifold thanks to their flowing bends (as opposed to a cast production mold) and bigger pipes, but a good downpipe is needed to further prevent reversion and bridge the gap between the headers and the rest of the exhaust system without sacrificing efficiency. Most 2009-2014 EcoBoost Ford F-150 downpipes have high flow catalytic converters incorporated within whereas select off-road models do without the catalytic converters all together. While eliminating the converters entirely maximizes flow, emissions are increased and thus may not be legal to drive in all states. An aftermarket tuner will insure the ECU is properly calibrated to the new high flow converters and prevent a CEL (check engine light). All aftermarket downpipes are designed to support either long-tube headers or shorty headers on your 2009-2014 Ford F-150 and are typically made of premium 304 or 409 stainless steel, which is a big step up over the factory aluminized steel. With at least 30 horsepower hidden within the exhaust system, an aftermarket downpipe is an integral step in recovering some of these lost ponies.
