How To Use the Wheel Offset Calculator

There are two ways to use our wheel offset calculator: You can calculate inner and outer clearance change from one wheel to another, or you can calculate the backspace for a given wheel.

Wheel Clearance Calculator

Here's how to estimate a change in clearance from an old wheel to a new wheel.

  • Step 1: Find your current wheel's width by measuring it or looking it up in its manual or on the manufacturer's website.
  • Step 3: If you added spacers, measure those or find their listed measurements.
  • Step 4: Repeat for your replacement wheel of choice.
  • Step 5: Enter those measurements into the boxes in the calculator interface and hit "Calculate."

The result will show you how much further in toward the suspension and out toward—or beyond—the fender your new wheel will go. This'll help you make sure it can fit your wheel well.

Wheel Backspacing Calculator

Need to know how much backspacing a wheel has before you buy it? Here's how to use our backspacing calculator so you can find out.

  • Step 1: Find your current wheel's width by measuring or looking it up in a manual or on the manufacturer's website.
  • Step 2: Find your current wheel's offset or measure it manually.
  • Step 3: Type those values into the fields and press the "Calculate" button.

Finding a wheel's backspacing will help you see if a wider wheel will fit safely inside your wheel well.

What Are Wheel Offset and Wheel Backspacing?

Illustration showing wheel offset and backspacing with the centerline, the mounting surface, backspacing, and offset

Wheel offset refers to the space between a wheel's centerline and its mounting surface, measured in millimeters. Basically, this tells you how far you can expect a wheel to sit inside your wheel well. A negative offset will give you an aggressive stance with a wheel that extends past the fender, while a positive offset will sit deeper inside the wheel well, closer to the suspension. Zero or neutral offset is relatively flush with the fender.

Wheel backspacing is the distance between the back of the wheel's mounting surface and the edge of the wheel closest to the suspension. This number is measured in inches and relates to the amount of space your wheel has to play with before it starts interfering with suspension components or your wheel well when you turn.

Using Our Wheel Offset and Backspacing Calculators

Whether you're doing a simple wheel upgrade or overhauling your truck's stance, our wheel offset calculator should help you get the fitment you're looking for.

Replacing your tires, too?

You'll also want to crunch the numbers in our tire size calculator to make sure you've got just the right fitment for your new wheels.
