Oxygen sensors are not only an integral part of your 1997-2003 Ford F-150's exhaust system, but they also play a significant role in the overall performance of the engine. Measuring the air/fuel ratio of the exhaust gas as it streams past, the oxygen sensors relay their findings back to the engine ECU where it is analyzed. Based on the feedback of the oxygen sensors, the ECU is then able to adjust the fuel trim and engine timing, in almost real time, to optimize engine performance in relation to temperature, throttle position, engine load and a myriad of other factors. In addition, catalytic converters are most efficient within a tight fuel/air ratio, and it is important for the ECU to receive the signal from the O2 sensors to ensure maximum catalyst efficiency. If one of the Motorcraft sensors were to fail, the ECU is programmed to fall back into a protection mode where the fuel mixture is enrichened for an overall loss of power and fuel economy. Fouled spark plugs are a common result of a failed O2 sensor and if left unchecked for long enough, can also eventually lead to a clogged catalytic converter. An OBD II reader/handheld tuner or multimeter can be used to verify their operation. They may be a small part, but properly functioning O2 sensors are imperative to smooth engine operation. NTK zirconia sensors exceed all the factory requirements and are a simple plug-and-play affair.
