An upgraded downpipe is hands down the best exhaust modification for a Duramax L5P. The factory downpipe is small and crushed which restricts exhaust flow and creates backpressure within the exhaust system. This backpressure then pushes up against, creating a force that restricts the turbine wheels ability to spin efficiently. Reducing backpressure greatly reduces the amount of force or stress on the turbo which allows it to spin more freely, increasing reliability, producing additional power, and allowing for higher levels of boost. 

Since the downpipe bolts directly to the L5P turbo increasing exhaust flow through the downpipe results in the greatest reduction in backpressure and therefore the biggest performance gains out of all the possible exhaust upgrades. In addition to horsepower and torque gains an upgraded L5P downpipe will result in a quicker turbo spool and lower EGTs which overall results in a more efficient turbo and a healthier engine.

While a downpipe is an effective upgrade on a stock L5P its benefits are amplified when you are tuned and running above stock boost levels. The additional exhaust flow and backpressure reduction help in allowing the turbo to hit the higher boost levels, more reliably. However, no tuning or custom tuning is required for our downpipe - it is a direct bolt-on fit and can be run completely stock.

Our downpipe will add very minimal sound gains to your truck - the benefits are predominantly performance oriented. If you want solid sound gains then we recommend upgrading to a 4" or 5" emissions-back exhaust system. Our downpipe will bolt both to the stock exhaust system or any aftermarket system as well.
