Hey, guys. Adam here with americantrucks.com, and today we're taking a closer look at, installing and testing the Truxedo Sentry Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover for the 2019 RAM 1500. Now if you're the lucky owner of a brand new RAM 1500, what you're probably wondering is how can you protect your cargo in your bed from weather elements and potential thieves? Well, if you're looking for a tonneau cover, which is, by the way, one of the most popular mods for trucks, this is a great way to go with a very traditional styling, but a little bit more of a premium spin on it. The roll-up style tonneau cover, again, is one of the most traditional styles of tonneaus, but a hard roll-up is something that's a little bit more protective and again, a little bit more premium that carries a higher price. Now the roll-up styling allows you to quickly unlatch it from your tailgate, roll it all the way up to your bulkhead or your back windshield, and safely secure it using straps of some kind. Now, this one, in particular, does use a very easy smart quick latch system, which really is just the pull of a cord on either side. No need to go to both sides like you would with a traditional roll-up style tonneau cover. You just quickly pull it from either side, driver or passenger, it unlatches from the quick latches and you can really just push it all the way back. It also includes straps and metal hooks that'll hook right into these rubber rings already pre-installed and molded into the tonneau cover bracket. That way you can roll all the way up if you're carrying larger cargo and drive with it open securely strapped up.This one does give you a lot more protection being a hard roll-up tonneau cover than you would get from a soft roll-up. Now like all tonneau covers, it is going to protect you from rain, snow, sleet, and hail, holding a lot of weight on top here, up to about 300 pounds. This guy does add a little bit extra security with the aluminum frame. It has a textured leather grained vinyl pressure-bonded to black aluminum panels. That's going all the way across the tonneau from tailgate to bulkhead. So you really can't break into this with a knife like you would be able to in a soft roll-up. So for a little bit of extra money, you'll be able to get that added security for your cargo.Going back to the weather protection, now it has Velcro sides, weatherstripping all around and weatherstripping in between those slats as well. So when you do have it rolled up, the weather is not really getting into the tonneau cover as it's rolled up. It's definitely gonna keep protection and it's not gonna rust out those rails. This one does come in right around $900 so again, it is going to give you a lot of those bells and whistles that you wouldn't get with a budget-friendly, entry-level soft roll-up, more protection, more security, and an easier to use system. As you'll see throughout this video, I'll be demonstrating those quick latches. Now the way this installs is very straightforward. Again, I'll show you guys every step of the process. Know that it gets one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Anybody can tackle this in the driveway at home. You can even do it all by yourself with very simple hand tools. I'm gonna show you every step, it will take you about an hour. Let's get to it.Tools using in this install include an impact gun or a ratchet, 13-millimeter socket and wire cutters or something similar. All right guys, first step here is to grab the weatherstrip sealant in the kit. We're gonna line our bulkhead with it. Now, as you can see, we've had tonneau covers up here recently and it's got a little bit of residue. Yours will look a lot cleaner. You want to make sure you're cleaning that off as well. When you're applying this weatherstrip sealant, you'll see that there is a portion of it that has an upward angle. That's gonna be on the inside of your truck bed. So what you're going to do is basically peel off the 3M backing and we're gonna align it from edge to edge right across here. Now when you make it to the end, if you have a little bit of excess, grab some wire cutters or something to cut this with, give it a snip and we're good to move on.Next step here is to lay your side bed rails in place. Now there are driver and passenger side specific rails, so you want to take note of that rope with the little hook on the end. That's gonna be toward the bulkhead. You also want to take note of this side rail and the open hole. That's gonna be on the bulkhead as well. So what we're gonna do is start on our passenger side, sit this up against that bulkhead. Just for this side here, we're gonna shut our tailgate. That's going to put pressure and hold it in place while we go back and clamp it. So when you look down you just want to make sure that it's sitting nice and flush up against that bulkhead and that it's straight. From there, shut your tailgate, holds it in place. Grab three clamps, hop in the bed, we'll tighten it down. All right, next step, grab one of your clamps. You want to loosen up that bolt, but you want to make sure the bolt's still through just so you can make adjustments on the clamp here. Now this is gonna go right up underneath and clamp the inside of your new bed rail to the side of the factory bed. Now you want to make sure you're taking note of how it's adjusting and how it's clamping. If it's clamping down and your side bed rail isn't completely flat, you may need to adjust the position of your clamps. So we've got ours in position. I'm gonna grab a 13 socket and tighten this guy down and we'll see how it looks. All right, so you're going to repeat that in the center and then more toward your tailgate. Now you can repeat that same process for the other side. Now what you're going to do is take your hard roll tonneau cover right out of the box as it is. You really don't have to do much with it. Pick it up. We're gonna place it right up against our bulkhead. Right where it's rolled up just like it is, let's lay it in place. Watch your fingers too because these little slats can get you. All right, so we're gonna pretty much drop this guy right on and this little flap right here we want to sit up against the weatherstripping. So we're gonna move it forward. You might have to move it forward and backward a little bit. Basically gonna get it to line up just like this. So now what you want to do is flip this guy upward and take note of this little piece of plastic here, this little locking tab as well as that hex bolt. Now the hex bolt head is gonna go right into the slot on the side bed rail that we just installed. Once that goes through, you got to crawl underneath of the tonneau, take this plastic and lock it into place. You wanna pull this guy back. So basically we're gonna push this down and line it up. Now. I know it's tough to see here, but we have to crawl underneath and lock it into place on both sides. All right. Now, at this point, you can see the flap come down. We're gonna line up that bolt head. As you push upward on the bed rail, you're gonna lock into place that piece of plastic there, that locking pin. Once that's in place, just repeat for the other side.At this point, we're just gonna unroll our tonneau cover. We have it set in place at the back. We're gonna pull it all the way back to the tailgate and latch it into place. When you're doing this, keep in mind, guys, since this is a hard roll-up, there's a lot of little crevices that you can get your fingers pinched into. Don't use your fingers to unroll it. You really want to use your palms and flat palm it. So we're gonna unroll it just like this. Make sure we're not getting pinched. You can see it really squares itself into place as you're pulling it back. Now as you're unrolling it and you get toward your tailgate, you want to stop and close your tailgate first. This is the preferred method of closing your tonneau cover. Tailgate first, then you're gonna finish this roll and latch it down. That snaps into place, this snaps into place and you're good to go. On some truck models, this weatherstrip sealant will not want to close on top of your tailgate, in which case you can use the alternate closing method for some trucks, which is basically going to be to latch it first and then shut your tailgate having this weather seal on the inside. Now the first time you do this, it'll seem very uncomfortable. It'll seem like the weatherstripping is not going to want to cooperate with you. You may have to manually pull the weatherstripping on top. Once it sits like this for about 24 to 48 hours, especially in the sun, the weatherstripping and the vinyl will start to relax, but once it's flattened out like this, it will want to stay flat more permanently and you can use it a little bit easier. So you saw how to unroll it and latch it, but if you want to open it up and gain access to your bed, very simple stuff. You're gonna drop your tailgate. You want to find that pull cord. You'll have it here and again over here. So it depends on what side of the truck you're on. You're gonna pull that and it unlatches. From there, stick to one side. And again, you're just gonna roll this guy up. Just be careful of your fingers. You don't want to get them stuck on anything. I'm gonna stick back here where the rubber is. All right, so as you get toward the tailgate here, say you want to drive with it open, you've got some really big cargo that you're transporting. You want to find this string here, and it has an adjustment cable that can go all the way to the back where there's these rubber latches that it'll hook into. All right, so as you can see, there's that rubber loop. You just hook this steel hook into it. Come back, pull this string, put some tension on it, tighten her down, and it's secure.Well, guys, that's gonna wrap up my review, install and testing for the Truxedo Sentry Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover.
