Jake: Jake here for AmericanTrucks, and today I'm taking a look at these Rough Country Upper Control Arms for 3-inch lifts fitting 2012 to 2018, four-wheel drive RAM 1500s. If you've got a 3-inch lift on your RAM, and you're having issues getting aligned, or just wanna make it behave a bit better both on and off-road, then these upper control arms are gonna be for you. Lifting your truck can put some excess wear and tear on crucial suspension components. So, if you've got a lifted truck, upgrading or replacing those stock control arms is a good idea for ride quality, and maintaining those cool lifted looks. Plus making sure that your truck performs how it's designed to from the factory. These are gonna be a direct replacement for your stock control arms. They're durable, serviceable, and affordable, and they make a definite improvement to your lifted RAM.Even though these are just a set of control arms, there's quite a bit to talk about here. And the first thing I wanna touch on, and perhaps the most important part that you might have noticed already right out the gate is the increased ball joint angle, which, of course, is gonna help accommodate for the extra lift versus stock. Now, that extra angle allows for a greater range of motion out on the street or trail. So, if you're off-roading, no need to worry about the additional travel needed. These are gonna accommodate and give you some extra articulation. And since these are set up for lifted applications, this is also gonna remove much of the hassle of getting your truck aligned as they keep things close to the factory suspension geometry. These are also forged for strength and durability. Since there's no welds here, there's a much lower chance of breakage, so you don't have any weak points for joints. You'll also get brand new Clevite brand OEM-style rubber bushings in the mounting points, plus new ball joints up front. Now, the ball joints are also greaseable. You just pop this cap off right here, and you'll find the little Zerk fitting right on there. So, that makes these easy to service and gives them a long life. And having both of those included right out of the box like this means the install is all that much easier for you, and it's gonna refresh the ride quality on your truck as well. Now, construction here, we've already talked about a little bit, but this is all forged aluminum for the arms themselves. Again, making them strong, lightweight, and durable. Like I mentioned a moment ago, being forged means that there are no joints or welds on here that could break. It lessens the potential of these actually cracking, or going out on you at some point. Bushings at the mounting points again are a Clevite brand rubber, and the ball joints are polyoxymethylene or POM. And again, these are greaseable, so it makes for an extremely low friction co-efficient meaning that both the ball joints and those bushings should have a nice long life, and provide you smooth operation for a long time to come.Pricing comes in at around $350 for the set, making them about the least expensive option in the category. And these may not have all the bells and whistles of some of the more expensive ones. And again, these are specifically for trucks with three-inch lifts on them, but they are gonna be an effective and worthwhile mod if you've got that three-inch lift on there, and they're gonna make driving it a whole heck of a lot nicer, whether you're on the road or on the trail.Installation is gonna come in at a two out of three on our difficulty meter, and doing both should take you about two hours to complete. Now, this is not a terribly complicated process on these trucks, but you are gonna have to get in there, move some suspension bits around, and if you've ever had to separate ball joints before, you know they can be stubborn. So, just make sure you're ready for that when you go in. Don't fear though, this is definitely a job you can handle at home. Just make sure you get your truck properly aligned once you finish, so you can enjoy all the benefits that these are gonna bring you. And now to show you that install process, let's throw it over to one of our AT customers.Man: The only tools that I used in this build was an 18-millimeter ratcheting wrench and a 21-millimeter socket is all that I used for this teardown. Starting off on the inside bolt here is a 21, and on the outside is an 18. This one here is also gonna be a 21. I don't know if you can see that. There we go. There's a 21 here. This one down here, this could actually spin when I start to unscrew it. So, what you want to do is have a wrench on this part, and a wrench down here. If this knuckle here does start spinning, the whole thing could spin on you. All right, so there we go. That wasn't that bad. Now, you also see that this bar here goes around, that will actually stop that nut on the other side from spinning. So, you actually don't need to have a 21 on the inside if you don't want to. I don't wanna take this all the way off. I do wanna make it loose. If I take it all the way off, it'll put it in a bind. So, I don't wanna do that. So, let me take off the other side real quick. And that's gonna go the other way. There we go. All right. So, I'm gonna actually use my impact wrench because I don't have a long 21, so I'm gonna use my impact wrench. All right. Pop out this so that you actually have some more room to get that off of here. I've seen some of them where they disconnected down here at the bottom, so you don't have to. It may actually slip down a little bit, so I'm gonna go in and pop that one out too. All right, here we go. I'm gonna disconnect this one here also, just to give it a little bit more play, so it's not in a bind. So, I'm disconnecting it here. I've already disconnected it here. It's disconnected on the backside here. Added that little holder there, and now again, I'm just disconnecting it from there. Here we go. All right, so it's all loose. Got a little bit more play. Be mindful there of your brake line. All right, so, 21-inch impact, so it is not spinning. Again, I don't wanna take this all the way off because I gotta not get this loose. So, I'm gonna have to get my trusted hammer over here. And hit it a couple of times. Knock this thing loose. All right, so loose there. So, now, all you gotta do is unscrew this. As you notice, this is dropping down. Lift this up, put this nut back on here. Unscrew this. That one drops off. All right. Take this off the side, and take tension off of this, and unscrew this side. There it goes. ... I get to see where that went. So, there's my original upper control arm. There's the right upper control arm. There's the left upper control arm. I know that it's the right and left. It's got a stamp right there. This says right. So, I'm gonna install this exact same way I took it off. So, I'm gonna get this mounted back up. I'm gonna start off. Perfect. I think it was made for it. I love it. All right, nut, washer on the bottom side of the upper control arm here. So, once we get these parts back together, now if you want to remove that plastic in there, that housing, you can. I don't see any need on it. Not that much in the way. Well, I did right there was just tap it a little bit. Get that vibration going on it too. Work its way in there. All right. I'm just gonna snug this down real quick, so that it's still movable because I need it to where I can get the bottom back in as well. All right. So, that's somewhat snug, somewhat good. All right, there we go. I'm gonna push it together. You wanna go back and make sure that you tighten these down to specs, 70 pounds, 120 pounds.Jake: That's going to wrap it up here for our review and install of the Rough Country Upper Control Arm for 3-inch lifts fitting 2012 to 2018 four-wheel drive RAM 1500s. Thank you for watching, and as always, for all things RAM, be sure to keep it right here at americantrucks.com.
