Merideth: If you have noticed some movement in your 2011 through 2016 four-wheel-drive F250 and 350 Super Duty steering, and you want to tighten it up, this Bilstein B8 5100 Series Steering Dampener will be a great option to look into. Now, this is a good choice for the truck owner who's looking for an affordable way to not only upgrade their worn-out or leaky factory stabilizer, but also improve their performance, for a better driving experience. Now, sometimes when adding off-road tires, or a more open-treaded tire, the F-250 can start to feel a little bit flighty on the highway, and this will tighten that up, for a more controlled experience compared to your factory one. I would like to mention that this will not be an end-all, be-all solution to fix death wobble, but this will help if you are feeling some feedback or a small wobble, when it comes to your steering system. Now, this stabilizer will help take the load off of your steering components, creating a smoother and more responsive ride, thanks to the gas-charged monotube design. Now, not only will the design help with dampening that lateral force, alleviating some of that stress, but it's also going to be able to take abuse in the long run, by reducing shock fade over time, even with those larger wheels and tires. The stabilizer will also come with premium seals, to prevent any leaking or pressure loss, especially if you're working the stabilizer a bit harder in off-road scenarios. Now, this will feature a large, 46-millimeter internal diameter construction, with a smooth body, for good dampening and heat dispersion, to keep the stabilizer working very efficiently over time. This will also feature a zinc plating on top, to resist any corrosion on the metal underneath, and resisting any surface damage when you are off-road. Now, this will also come with OE-style bushings on either side, and will be a direct bolt-on, so you're not gonna have to worry about any modifications when it comes to this kit. And it will also come with a pre-installed rubber boot over the shaft, to protect it, and resist any damage. Now, this will also be a direct bolt-on, so you're not gonna have to worry about any modifications when it comes to this kit, and it will come with all of the hardware needed for a straightforward install. Now, this is gonna come in at about $160 for the steering dampener, and that's gonna be a pretty affordable price compared to others in the category. Now, I would say that this is going to be right in the middle when it comes to the features and the overall performance. It's going to be a big step up from factory, and other entry-level replacement style options, especially with the monotube gas-charged design, for a long-lasting and higher-performing design. Now, compared to some of the super-expensive choices, they may have a flashier build, or are intended for higher-performance situations. But if you are doing some moderate off-roading and mainly daily driving with your F-250, and you're looking for a long-lasting steering dampener, that's going to help when it comes to the feedback in your steering system, and save you a couple bucks while doing it, this is gonna be a great choice.Install is gonna be a 2 out of 3 wrenches on the difficulty meter. I would recommend to have a little bit of mechanical know-how in order to tackle this job. But if you do have that, it should only take you about an hour or so to get this on your F-250. Speaking of the install, one of our customers here has put this on their truck, and is going to walk you through what the details look like, step by step. So, that is going to wrap it up for my review. Let's go ahead and get into the install.Man: Okay. Here's a little list of the tools you're gonna need. Get a spray of lubricant. Helps, especially if you're in a rusty area. You want that to soak for a while, so that makes it a little bit easier for you. Get that breaker bar, to get those bolts and nuts started. And it's a half-inch. Use the half-inch ratchet. You're gonna need a 15-millimeter socket for that passenger side bolt, 18-millimeter for the nut on the driver side, to take off that stock. 19-millimeter, to put that Bilstein nut back into the new product. Hammer, to pop it out....on the first one. Get a little bit of...here. Got a soak-up cloth underneath there. Let that soak in a little bit, like that. All right. I'm the opposite in here. Get a little bit. Soaking down there. Let that get soaking in. Got a 15-millimeter. Putting on there. I'm gonna use my breaker bar, and see if I can get that thing started. That came off very nicely. I like the feel of that a lot better. And it's so easy to access over here. That's the best part of this whole thing. But let's get [inaudible 00:05:34] on this and just see how [inaudible 00:05:35] And it's going very well. All right. Okay. So, I got that one nice and started. I think that should move along nicely. Let's try the other end, and see how that goes.Okay. Now we're working on the driver side. That one looks a lot bigger. It's a 15 on the passenger side. And this end is looking bigger. 18. Looks like we got an 18-millimeter on that. There we go. Very nice. You could almost use a deep socket on this one. It's just barely got... Probably gonna need to pop that out of there. So we're gonna grab a hammer, and see if we can get that moving. Back with Thor. Let's see how this goes. A nice little pop on here. There we go. Okay. I'm gonna finish taking off on that passenger side. Okay. Back to this guy here. There we go. Something else I'm gonna do here is I'm just gonna put a little white grease on here. They didn't say anything about it. It might slide in easily. But before I get under the truck, I just wanna put a little greaser on there. Just to help with anything to slide in there a little bit better. And not a lot. Just enough to make it not bind. And we'll give that a shot right there. Put it on there nice and easy. So, I'm gonna start with driver side. Now, on this driver side, I've got it in a little bit. And I'm gonna change the camera up so you can get a better view of kind of how it looks first, at this point. And we'll lock that in. So, hold on one second. And here's a shot of how much that bolt has come through on the driver side. And if you go up in here, you can see how much is still out. And looking down. I'll pull that a little bit, and attach it to the passenger side. But on here, I've moved it in as far as I can. And you still got a good amount left on that. So, when I put on that washer and locking nut, that'll pull that through. And what I'm gonna do first is just put on that washer and locking nut, to help secure it and stay in place. I'm just gonna snug it up there. I don't want it too tight or anything like that, because I still wanna get that other end moved and attached before. I'm gonna back off of that just a little bit. I wanna get that passenger side, down here, attached in there, and get that ready to go. So let's go do that.Okay. So, here we are back on the passenger side. And right here, that's where we wanna attach this. And I've still got that strap on there, but it's a little farther out. So, hopefully I can compress this a little bit. I'm gonna go ahead and put the bolt through the steering stabilizer, so I'm ready for it. And then see if I can pull that back a little, like that. Get that somewhat started. Okay. Cool. So, there. We've got that started. I'm tightening that up. [inaudible 00:10:05] still that 15. Okay. That is tight. Honestly, I don't have any foot-pound measurements to put that on there. But I've got it good and solid. Tight. No? Let's go back over to the driver side, tighten that down, and start to get this thing finished up. Okay. We're back on driver side. First thing I'm gonna do is just get rid of that strap, so I don't forget about that, hanging around down there. Switch back out to my 19, and finish getting this thing tightened up. Boy, that is good and tight too.Merideth: So, that's gonna wrap it up for my review and the install of the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Steering Dampener, fitting 2011 through '16 F-250 and 350 Super Duties. And you can find this right here at americantrucks.com.

      Nice updgrade from stock

I replaced my stock steering stabilizer with this unit. Very straightforward replacement process, and a noticeable improvement over stock. With around 25,000 miles on my truck, the stock stabilizer wouldn't even extend itself if pushed all the way in when removed from the truck. This was definitely worth every penny!

      Good Product/Great customer service!

22’ F-250 Lariat 4WD 7.3 gas. Pictures are taken from under the front bumper looking toward the rear. The first Bilstein steering damper I ordered arrived without the required washer & nylock nut needed for proper installation. Looks like the box was slightly damaged and it may have “escaped” somehow. Anyway, AT customer service was great, credited me a small amount for my time, and they got the replacement damper mailed out quickly. Installed quickly and easily and I can feel the steering is definitely a little smoother at highway speeds. This was the 2nd time I had either incorrect or missing parts in an item ordered on AT.com - and AT customer service was great again helping to rectify the issue. I’ll continue shopping on this site for sure!

      Supposed to prevent death wobble

Got this steering damper to prevent death wobble on my F250, since all those new truck have this very weak point on the front end. Very easy installation - just one nut and a bolt on another end. The shock absorber is gas filled and feels very light comparing to the factory one. Tested it on a speed 60mph+ and seems to be working. So, the truck doesn't swing and it keeps its trajectory. I guess the time will tell if it's worth of investment. If you struggling to take out one of the bolts, don't hammer it out. Just use tie rod and pitman arm puller, or similar tool. It will come out easily.
