What Size Wheels Fit F-150

The Ford F-150 is an awesome truck from the factory, and it has been throughout its history. You’re getting a truck that lives up to the Built Ford Tough moniker, with a reliable engine, great aftermarket support, and great comfort. While everything is great right out of the box, if there's one area you can improve it's the wheels.

Whether you want to replace worn-out factory rims on your stock F-150 or you’re looking for an upgrade, we have you covered.

Ford F-150 Bolt Pattern

Before getting into what rim size you can add to your truck for a bump in style points, it's important to make sure you have the right F-150 lug pattern. The good news is that the lug pattern on stock Ford F-150s has remained consistent since 2004 at 6×135. Prior to 2004, however, the bolt pattern varies based on the model year.

1981 to 1996 F-150s have a 5×139.7mm lug pattern and 1997 to 2003 models have a 5×135mm lug pattern. It's also possible to change or alter your lug pattern if you swap out the hubs, so if you have an aftermarket suspension you'll want to check with our sales techs before placing any orders.

Ford F-150 Wheel Size

Now that you know the lug pattern, we can move on to some of the fun stuff, starting with wheel diameter. Once you know what sizes will fit you can get creative with Ford F-150 lift kits, new tires, and other suspension upgrades. The most important bit of information to know is the diameter of the wheel.

Most recent models dating back to 2004 come with 17-22-inch wheels depending on the trim level, with wheel sizes getting larger as you move up the trim levels and add more packages. Going back to 1997-2003, Ford F-150 wheel sizes tend to range from 16 to 17 inches, but some unique trims may have wheels that are up to 20 inches in diameter. The generation before it (1987-1996) has 15-inch stock wheels with a lot less variation between trim levels. Last but not least, you have the first iterations of the F-150 that tend to be 15 or 16 inches in diameter.

F-150 Truck on Big Wheels and Tires

It's also important to note that the stock offset and backspacing play a role in wheel size, with most recent models having a positive offset of 44mm to 55mm with around 6.5 inches of backspacing.

While we mentioned a lot of the stock wheel sizes, your options are limitless when you consider lifting your suspension. Installing a Ford F-150 lift kit will give you more room to play with so you can add bigger wheels and tires. Lift kits are available from small leveling kits up to massive 8-inch kits.

If you’re looking for bigger wheels and don't want to upgrade your suspension, it's a good idea to go with wheel spacers. These parts create some distance between the wheel and the hub, and you don't have to worry about reliability when you choose options from brands like Mammoth, which makes a wide variety of wheel spacers for your Ford F-150.

Ford F-150 Tire Sizes

F-150 Big Tire Size

Getting the right tire size for your Ford F-150 is just as important as getting the right wheel size. The tire size will change based on the type of wheel that you have, and sometimes even the type of tire. Common tire sizes for recent Ford F-150s vary based on the trim level with most standard models having the 245/70/R17.

Going through every tire size for every unique trim level and specification isn't as helpful as helping you read the side of the tire, which will help you choose a tire based on your specific wheel specifications. Plus, reading the side of your tire is a great way to find the wheel diameter as well!

To read the side of the tire you need to know what all the numbers mean, and we’ll use the standard 245/70/R17 tire to break it all down. Starting with 245, this number represents the width of the sidewall in millimeters from one sidewall to the other. The next number, 70, represents the aspect ratio of your tire, which is a measurement of the height and width ratio as a percentage.

The letter R stands for the type of tire, which is a radial in this case. Most modern F-150 tires will be radials, whether they're for off-roading or a set of all-seasons. Lastly, you have the number 17, which in this case means that the wheel diameter is 17 inches.

All of these numbers will change based on your truck and any modifications or special packages you have, so make sure you read the sidewall before ordering and wheels or tires for your truck.
