Your engine uses a myriad of sensors and computer signals to balance how much air/fuel mixture is added its cylinders. When the fire is lit, it produces heart-pounding horsepower. But if you’ve added a bunch of performance mods to your ride’s motor and are still rocking the stock sensors, you may be missing out on a few easy-to-wrangle ponies. Luckily, you can take full-advantage of your mods by installing a performance mass airflow sensor, but what does it do? No worries, take a seat and we’ll fill you in.
Your mass air flow sensor or “MAF” detects the volume of air as it enters your engine by heating up a thin wire or resistor. The computer in your car then measures electrical resistance through the MAF as the air flowing through the sensor cools its components down. With a firm understanding of how much air is flowing into your engine, the computer can then direct fuel injectors to add more or less gasoline to the air/fuel mixture.
As you bolt on performance engine mods that increase air flow, your original MAF may not be able to gauge the higher volume of air, making it impossible for your car’s computer to accurately read the sensor’s signals and add the correct amount of fuel to match. This can cause your car to feel sluggish, lose high RPM horsepower and get worse gas mileage. A performance mass airflow sensor on the other hand can not only support more air flow through it due to their larger bores, but can also read huge volumes of air flow accurately, ensuring your car’s computer is always kept in the loop.
