Jake: Jake here for AmericanTrucks. Today I'm taking a look at the JMS PedalMAX Drive By Wire Throttle Enhancement Device for 2004 to 2008 F-150s. This is going to appeal to you F-150 owners if you're looking for a quick and easy way to improve your throttle response and the overall driving experience of your truck. This is going to give you the ability to fine-tune how your accelerator pedal responds and help reduce or eliminate the lag that you normally feel.Let's get something out of the way first though. This is not going to increase the power output of your engine because this is a throttle controller, not a tuner. The goal here is to decrease or eliminate the lag that you normally feel when pressing the accelerator. Like anything with an electronic throttle, which is pretty much every vehicle these days, there isn't quite an immediate response when you put your foot down. That lag in the pedal is baked in by the factory to make the truck easy to drive smoothly, but it can also be a nuisance in certain situations out on the road. The way to eliminate or change that is with something like this PedalMax module from JMS.This is a plug-and-play module that really allows you to fine-tune how your F-150 is going to respond. The headline here is the little dial. As you can see, this is marked from 0 up to 100. You can feel and hear nice little click and detent at zero. There's no buttons to mess with. You can change or adjust the settings on the fly without having to take your eyes off the road.Again, you'll notice that this is marked at 25, 50, 75, and 100, which is the percentage increase. You're not married to adjust those settings either. Because it's a dial, this is pretty much infinitely adjustable. If you're feeling 37 or 78 or something like that, you can go ahead and dial that in and it's going to stay right where you leave it. Cranking this all the way up to 100 is going to completely eliminate that drive-by-wire throttle delay. If you want the really immediate response, you've got that option too. Just crank it all the way up.This is also going to help make for quicker downshifts from the transmission because you're going to hit that kick down sooner when you dial up the response. One drawback to having the dial for adjustments here is that there aren't any preset modes like Valet or Eco like some other modules have. I do think the adjustability and the ease of use here can certainly make up for that.Again, unlike many other throttle controllers on the market, you're not going to have to mess with buttons or clicking through presets. Here, you can really just dial this one in literally exactly the way that you want it. It's also super easy to put everything back to stock. Just undo the connectors. Very simple, very straightforward. The module here is also waterproof, so it will be able to handle anything you can throw at it. All the connectors are OEM grade as well. That knob that we were talking about earlier, it operates very smoothly. You've also got a long enough cord here that you can mount this pretty much anywhere that's convenient for you. The kit does come with a little bit of double-sided tape for the back here, making it very easy to mount. You can also screw it in using the holes on the side. If you're looking for a less permanent solution, you've got that tape that you can utilize.Price-wise, this one comes in around $325. That is on the higher end for a product like this. I do really feel that the adjustability, that dial setup, and the unobtrusiveness of it all is really worth it. If you're looking for a way to make a difference in the way your F-150 drives without altering anything permanently or going all the way to a tuning module, this is absolutely worth your consideration. When it comes to installation, it really could not be much easier than this. This is going to get a one out of three on our difficulty meter, and it should only take you about 10 minutes to get it installed and working. It's really just a matter of doing up a couple of plugs down by the pedal itself, mounting that dial where you want it, plugging it in, and then you're pretty much on your way. Again, JMS includes some zip ties and also some double-sided tape to help keep everything neat and tidy too. Enough talking about it, let's head over to the install bay now, and we'll show you how to get this one done.Man: Hi, everyone. Today, we're installing a throttle enhancement device on our F-150, so let's get started. Here's our device that we're going to be installing. As you can see, it's got a control module. Now, you may have to plug this in when you get it from the factory. A lot of times, they're already plugged in. If not, it's a real simple process of just plugging it in. On the other end, you'll see we've got a female and a male connector. We're going to hook this up to the top of our throttle pedal, and we're going to put one end on the pedal itself, and the other end is going to go into the wiring harness. Now, there's also a little red wire here that you really don't have to worry about because it's a diagnostic wire in case there are issues later on down the road. You can call the manufacturer, and they'll help you determine what's wrong with your system. There's another plug here that's going to go to your actual controller knob, which is right here, that you can mount on your dash, and you can adjust your throttle sensitivity on the fly as you're driving. We've disconnected ours for now just to make it easier to plug everything in and show you how this all gets hooked up. Let's go ahead and get started.Like I said, it's right at the top of the throttle pedal, so it's a little difficult to see with the camera, but we'll do our best to make sure that you can see what we're doing. So here's the connector at the top of our throttle pedal that we're going to disconnect so that we can plug in our device. Now, you may have on the inside towards the console area, there may be a red tab on the end of your connector. Ours does not have one, but if you do, all you have to do is lift that out, basically pushing it towards the rear of the truck. Now, it won't come out, it'll just unlock. Now, once you get it unlocked, then you can push on the release lever right below it and pull out your connector. Now, once you've got your connector pulled out, we can go ahead and hook up our device. Now, the wiring harness is going to be your female connector, so we're going to hook up the male connector to that piece. So, we'll go ahead and insert that into our wiring harness until it snaps into place, and then we'll go ahead and connect the female plug on the device back to the throttle cable. Now, we can go ahead and plug this in, make sure it snaps into place. Now, as you can see, the device itself will actually hang down on the floor of the truck. We don't want that to happen, so what we would recommend, and the system does supply you with some zip ties, is to go ahead and tuck this up inside and use the zip ties to secure it and make sure it's out of the way of any moving parts, and also make sure that it's not near any extreme heat or cold that could damage the product. So for now, we're just going to leave this hang right here, and we'll go ahead and run the control knob down through the front of the dash and plug it back in here, and then we can go ahead and mount that.So now we can go ahead and feed this wire for the control knob down through the dash right below the steering column. You may find it easier if you just pop off the top of the trim panel here, and then you can feed it through, and then just snap that trim panel back into place. Now, once we've got the wire fed through, we go ahead and plug it in, make sure it snaps into place, and then go ahead and feed the rest of the excess wire down through, and we'll zip tie that up once we've determined where we're going to mount our control knob. So let's take care of that right now. Now, the kit does come with this double-sided adhesive pad, and what we'll do is we'll take the cover off of one side, attach it to the back of our control knob, and then we'll take the cover off of the other side, and we're going to stick ours right here on the dash. Now, you can mount yours wherever you want. This is just where we're going to put ours just for the demonstration. So we'll just pull off one side of the backing, and attach it to the back of the control knob. Kind of press it down, make sure that it sticks good, and then we'll go ahead and remove the backing of the other side, and we'll mount it on our dash. Now that you've got it mounted, you can go ahead and finish running the wire back down through the dash here, and then, like we said earlier, because of the excess wire so that you can mount it wherever you want here, plus the fact that the control module is now hanging down, now would be the time to go ahead and use the provided zip ties in there and tie everything up, attach it underneath the dash to either some of the other wiring harness or a brace, whatever you can find down there, to make sure that it stays out of the way and it doesn't cause any interference with the operation of your accelerator pedal. Also, make sure that it stays away from any moving parts and any sources of excessive heat or cold. And there's your install. And that wraps up our review and install of the JMS PedalMAX Drive By Wire Throttle Enhancement Device for the '04 to '08 F-150. Thanks for watching and remember, for all things F150, keep it right here at americantrucks.com.
