2016 Ram 3500

The 2016 Ram 3500 is all about huge numbers. The 3500 has a max payload rating of 7,390 pounds, while the maximum towing capacity is 31,210 pounds. The standard engine is a 6.4-liter gasoline V8 with 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. If those numbers are inadequate, the Ram 3500 is available with an optional Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel inline-six, sold in three tuning states depending on the gearbox. If you choose the six-speed manual, the diesel mill pumps out 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque. But with the six-speed automatic, the diesel is good for 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque. However, coupled with the heavy-duty Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, an upgraded High Output version unleashes 385 horsepower and 900 pound-feet of torque. The Ram 3500 is available in three cab styles (two-door regular cab, four-door crew cab, and four-door mega cab) and two bed lengths (8-foot and 6.4-foot beds). Best of all, the Ram 3500 is available with a single-rear-wheel or a dual-rear-wheel configuration for all three body styles.

Responsible Tuning

Sure, the primary objective of aftermarket tuning is to unleash a few more horsepower and torque from your Ram 3500’s gasoline V8 or Cummins turbodiesel. But the most dramatic effects of engine and transmission tuning have more to do with creating a unique profile that addresses your own particular performance and reliability needs. FOr example, the` 6.7-liter Cummins diesel is a magnificent powerhouse of an engine, but the weakest link has to be the Chrysler 68RFE six-speed automatic transmission. In fairness, the 68RFE is better and more reliable than its forebearers, but it still lacks the strength and durability to keep up with the diesel’s mountainous torque output. If you passed on the more expensive (yet more durable) Aisin AS69RC six-speed automatic, tuning the engine and transmission shift points will make a huge difference in extending the life of your Ram’s Chrysler-sourced gearbox. And even though you have the brawnier Aisin automatic, your 2016 Ram 3500 could still benefit from aftermarket engine tuning.

Keep It Cool

The stock intercooler in your Ram 3500 is good enough for most driving applications and mild towing. Diesel engines produce a ton of heat, so keeping it cool with an intercooler and cold air intake upgrade is vital for hardworking Ram trucks. But unbeknownst to many, upgrading the intercooler yields significant gains in engine performance and long-term reliability. Aftermarket intercoolers have a larger capacity than stock and offer better heat reduction properties while improving airflow. Furthermore, larger intercoolers will reduce pressure drop, allowing the turbocharger to spool more efficiently under heavy duress. And of course, colder air means more power, and you get more cold air with an aftermarket intercooler. Pair it with a high-flow cold air intake, and your Ram diesel will not only lay down more power to the ground, but you also get better fuel economy, not to mention a more exhilarating intake sound.

Changing Gears

Okay, most Ram truck owners are aware of the standard 68RFE six-speed automatic’s durability issues. But what many don’t know is upgrading to a deep sump transmission pan is typically enough to address the issue. Like the engine in your truck, the transmission’s primary nemeses are heat and friction. Too much of either could result in early transmission failure, and you get tons of heat and friction if you regularly carry or pull heavy loads. However, increasing the transmission fluid level capacity keeps the ATF temperature lower to preserve the life of your Ram’s gearbox. Most aftermarket transmission pans are made of aluminum to help dissipate heat, and some have easy-access drain plugs and magnetic catchers for easier maintenance.
