1997-2017 F150 Intake System Modifications

1997-2017 F150 Intake System Modifications

Maximum power is all about intake efficiency. Nothing moves the horsepower needle on any engine more than intake system efficiency. The key to maximum horsepower output at the crankshaft and eventually the wheels? Getting the right air/fuel mixture to the combustion chamber of each cylinder at exactly the right instant for perfect ignition and efficient combustion. With that in mind, there are a number of intake system upgrade products that can optimize the energy in every droplet of fuel by improving delivery of the air/fuel charge to the cylinders. The best part? Many of the upgrades are quick, easy to install, and reasonably priced.

With so many F150 intake modifications available it is important to understand the benefits of each upgrade as well the complementary components so that you can capitalize on the available horsepower increases. With that knowledge, you can tap into all the power that your truck has to offer.

1997 to 2003 Ford F150 Intake System Upgrades

Cold air intake systems boost performance by improving airflow of cold, dense air through high-flow air filtration. Air filters are typically included and are oiled type, or dry element washable and reusable.

These high capacity air filters eliminate the airflow restriction of the stock air box. Reprogramming the computer is usually not required. Be sure to look for CARB (California Air Resources Board) 50-state compliance and inclusion of complete installation hardware, grommets, clamps, bolts, and gaskets. Installation requires only basic hand tools and typically takes about an hour. Pricing typically ranges from about $280 to $370.

Air filtration upgrades include high flow filters that are oiled or dry, cleanable and reusable that are simple direct replacements for the stock paper element filters to increase intake air flow. These install in minutes in the original equipment air box and cost in the $50 to $70 range.

Mass air flow (MAF) meters detect volume of airflow to assure the correct corresponding amount of fuel supplied by the fuel injector. If the MAF is not functioning with complete accuracy, engine performance is sub-optimal. A hot wire style MAF meter measures airflow by the using the cooling rate of a heated wire located inside. Installation requires only basic tools, takes only about 15 minutes and requires no computer reprogramming. Pricing typically ranges from about $100 to $290.

A throttle body upgrade and throttle body spacers boost intake efficiency by improving air flow velocity and turbulence for improved air/fuel mixture atomization and maximize combustion efficiency. They’re available for this model year range of F150s. Installing throttle body spacers and boosters require basic hand tools and takes about a half hour to an hour. Pricing ranges between $30 for a booster and $130 for spacers. Replacement throttle bodies are also available. The throttle body upgrade improves flow volume, is direct bolt-on installation taking about an hour to two hours and costs start at about $250 with no computer reprogramming required.

2004 to 2008 Ford F150 Intake System Upgrades

Cold air intake systems affording the same benefits as for the 1997 to 2003 models are also available but may include added features such as an air dam and higher capacity oiled or dry reusable air filtration depending on engine option. The air dam is also available as a separate unit that includes the air filter upgrade.

The air dam creates a barrier between the engine and air filter to prevent engine heat from increasing air temperature and thus reducing air density at the filter. Be sure to look for CARB (California Air Resources Board) 50-state compliance. Installations typically take about an hour, require only basic hand tools, do not require computer reprogramming, and kits include all the hardware necessary. Prices range from about $300 for the air dam/filter unit to $300-$350 for the complete cold air intake system.

Air filtration upgrades, MAF meters, and throttle body enhancement options will return for this generation offering many of the same benefits as they did for the prior generations and then some. Since superchargers and turbochargers are more readily available, they will add up for more benefits when used in combination most specifically with the MAF meter.

Superchargers and turbos are likely the ultimate upgrade you can make to an intake system. Instead of waiting to have the engine draw in the air you’re now force feeding it more than it would normally draw on its own. The kits offered for these trucks are complete in every way meaning you can pop them on out of the box and immediately hit the street. Other mods are definitely complementary to this type of upgrade though. The next logical step is to invest in a boost controller for an extra $100. If you’re looking to get even more bang for your buck, intercoolers for these trucks are about $250-$300 and will absolutely give that throttle even more snap.

Water/methanol injection systems are the ultimate compliment to a boosted system. They increase power by keeping the fuel charge temperature down on naturally aspirated or forced induction systems. By reducing intake charge temperature, oxygen concentration, and overall octane is increased. Installation is of moderate complexity and may take several hours. Water/methanol requires retuning for optimum performance. Price range is typically $450 to $500.

Keeping the turbo itself cool is just as important as keeping the air inside cool. The turbocharger blanket is designed to insulate the rest of the equipment under the hood and the hood itself from the high temperatures generated by the turbocharger. It can also reduce turbo lag and increase spool time. Installation is easy, typically taking ten to fifteen minutes and pricing runs between $100 and $150.

2009 to 2014 Ford F150 Intake System Upgrades

For this generation not much has changed when it comes to basic intake upgrades. Even when we’re talking about the Ecoboost engine’s cold air intakes, MAF meters and air filtration upgrades are all along the same lines with little variance. For non-Ecoboost models the supercharger and turbocharger kits and accessories are also very familiar.

Turbocharger upgrades are available for Ecoboost models that increase intake flow and rear wheel horsepower output. Depending on manufacturer, the kit may include the twin turbochargers, spark plugs, high flow air filters, exhaust system, and tuner. Check product specifications for exact parts list of what is included. Complete kits of this nature start at about $4,500. As with the supercharger kit, installation requires advanced mechanical skill and tools or professional installation and may take about two days to complete.

Intercooler upgrades that boost performance by reducing heat around the engine and thereby cause a reduction intake temperature are available. Direct bolt-in models are available with prices ranging from about $800 to $1,200. Installation time is typically about four to six hours, requiring advanced mechanical skill or professional installation.

2015 to 2017 Ford F150 Intake System Upgrades

Visiting the newest and most recent generation of Ford trucks, we find not much has changed under the hood. The well renowned and beloved Ecoboost returns and even more ponies follow with it. The aftermarket strongly supports these trucks in all trim levels and we’re not to see any major changes in what is offered other than the latest and greatest.

For naturally aspirated applications, we will find the tried and true offering such as cold air intakes and air filtration modifications return. Turbos and superchargers are also readily available meaning you don’t have to miss a beat if you purchased an unboosted model. For Ecoboost owners turbocharger upgrades, intercoolers, and water meth kits have your name all over them.
