Although they're made from materials that usually break relatively easy, unless we're talking about carbon fiber grilles, it's debatable whether an automotive grille serves as protection for the engine and other components found under the hood. Surely, they'll make it more difficult for damage to occur in case of an accident, but when it comes to dirt and debris, it doesn't filter these particles from reaching the engine compartment. It will protect the engine and radiator from larger debris such as stones or animals, in case you run into any.

In sporty and performance car models, the grill can also improve the vehicle's overall aerodynamics by directing the air at high speeds. This doesn't only make the engine run far more efficiently, but it also makes the vehicle use less fuel and reach and maintain higher driving speeds. Of course, with pickup trucks, it’s almost like driving a wall against the wind, so aerodynamics aren’t the main focus. Although, many models these days, like the F-150 EcoBoost, have active grille shutters that help streamline the airflow.

The fact that sportier and more powerful vehicles require more air for cooling the engine doesn’t mean that the grille is proportionally larger. They’re designed to direct air strategically for maximum efficiency.

The automotive grille always had more than one function, but as vehicles evolved and became more powerful, so did the functions of the grille shift. Nowadays, car designers need to think about more than how the car will look with a specific grille to make the vehicle as efficient as possible and reduce drag by directing air in specific directions.
