Jake: Jake here for American Trucks, and in this video, we're taking a look at the Air Design Tailgate Spoiler in satin black, fitting 2021 and newer F-150s without the tailgate step. Now, who says trucks can't have a spoiler? If you're going for a more street truck vibe with your build, or even if you just want a little improvement to your F-150's aerodynamics, this Air Design tailgate spoiler should be on your list. This is a very slick, easy-to-install part that's going to help set your truck apart from all the others out there. Now, a tailgate spoiler on a truck may seem like a bit of an oxymoron, but go with me on this one because I happen to think that nearly every truck would look good with something like this. Now, I'm a big fan of the street truck vibe here, and Air Design has crafted a cool little addition for your F-150, providing you don't have the tailgate step, of course. It's going to make it just a bit more street trucky. This just sticks right on top of your tailgate, and I think it really works well with the truck's overall styling. But that's not to say it doesn't stand out on its own merit. This has a bit of that old school ducktail appearance to it, visually and physically extending the top end of the tailgate for a more aerodynamic look. And it does have some additional aero properties as well. Pickups suffer from a lot of turbulence in the back, especially if your bed is not covered. Now this is going to help smooth out some of that airflow going over the tailgate. But don't get it twisted here, you're not going to have enough down force to, say, drive upside down in a tunnel or anything crazy. But a little extra assistance with airflow is never a bad thing, and frankly, it just looks cool. But in order for it to look cool for a long time, you need it to be made well too. Now, this one in particular is made from three layer co-extruded ABS plastic, and it comes finished in this nice satin black, just as you see it here, so it's ready to go right out of the box and it's going to match very nicely with the rest of the trim on your truck. Everything fits exactly as it's supposed to right on top of your tailgate, and it even attaches with the included 3M double-sided tape. But we'll talk more about that in a moment.First, let's talk about the price. Now, this is gonna run you about $300. That doesn't make it the least expensive thing you can get for your truck, but it is a rather unique piece and you really can't put a price tag on being unique. Plus, again, it's ready to go right out of the box, so you don't even need to worry about paint or any additional expense in order to get it to look right on your truck.Installation is going to get a one out of three on our difficulty meter, and it should only take you about 30 minutes to complete this job. And like we were discussing a moment ago, this is just going to stick on in place. No drilling or bolts required, and the tape is already preset and ready to go for you. Not much more I can say about it here, so with that, let's hand things over to one of our AT customers. Tools used for this install include cleaning solution, a cleaning cloth, tape, and the included adhesion promoter.Man: Hello. Today we're going to be installing the tailgate spoiler. It's for a 2021 and up F-150. Today, this is a 2023 F-150 XLT. Also, this spoiler is for the tailgate without the step. So the first thing that we're going to do is we're just going to go through the directions one step at a time. So the first thing that it says you do is you need to clean the surface with some alcohol. So we have the alcohol and we have some masking tape to help align it. So we're going to first go ahead and clean the surface. I like to use a microfiber because it won't leave any residue from the paper towels [inaudible 00:03:44.613] the alcohol on the paint right below the factory spoiler because that's where some of the tape goes. So let me just super clean all the way across, and then up, then along all of the edges. So we're going to make a couple passes, let it dry, and then do it one more time. You want to just make sure all the wax or anything from when they had it at the dealership was basically off. So that's the first pass. You can see there's a little bit of residue on there. So one more time. And along the edges. Also, you can see I have some masking tape pre-cut. Once we put it on there and align it, we need the masking tape to keep it aligned. That's the first step. Looks clean. Let that dry for a second. Then what we're going to do is grab the tailgate spoiler. The tape is still protected. We haven't peeled any of that off yet. Set that in place. Check your gaps around the factory light and handle. That looks pretty good. You'll have about 3/16 of an inch on both sides. That's about what we have right there. I'll add some pictures of that. So then I'm going to take a little masking tape. I'm just going to put it here on this side and it's showing that gap of the 3/16. We need one more on this side. Okay, we have that in place. That'll help when you go to put it back on the center at left to right. And then [inaudible 00:06:01.109]... Hold it down. I'm gonna put some tape right here. Put them in place. I'm gonna line it up at the bottom of the spoiler. I'm gonna need about three pieces on each side. Push down and then peel the 3M off. You'll wanna push down and then in. So you push it down and then you firmly push in. This way, you'll know that you have it fully seated all the way down. It goes down a good 16th of an inch when you put pressure down on there. [inaudible 00:07:03.209] Okay. So afterwards, just check and see you have about an eighth to 3/16. [inaudible 00:07:13.105]So the next step, remove the spoiler. Put your adhesion promoter. Okay. Now we're going to go over that same surface area that you did originally, that you cleaned with the alcohol. And remember, the paint is going to go on this painted surface on the back and then along all of the edges of the factory spoiler. You do not have to remove the factory spoiler. It has to stay in place. So we're gonna go one more time. Make sure you got it really good. So you're feeling it starts to get a little tacky. Get the adhesion going. All right. Then you want to take the razor blade, and on the back you'll see the red, so you just peel this off a little bit, getting kind of started, like so. You just kind of leave it hanging up like that. You want to leave it hanging like that. Peel these off. It's a little tricky, but it does come off. And then just fold it a little bit and stick it back on itself. [inaudible 00:08:58.512] Then same thing all the way around. You just wanna pull a little bit off. Don't pull it all off. You should get all of them pulled off a little bit, then you can start re-installing. And then this side. Last one. Super sticky. Okay. So we got that. Now what we're gonna do, flip it over. Make sure our tape's hanging up. We're going to line it up with the tape. Do be careful. Align first. Make sure it's [inaudible 00:10:13.500]. So we are aligned all the way around. I'm gonna pull the sides out first, kind of lock it in place. Now remove the masking just to make sure it's not underneath. Start that. So I wanna do this side just to make sure you have that right. Then we do along the back. Peel the top. Lost that one. [inaudible 00:11:00.678] We lost our red tape. All right, let's try that again. Let's do it slowly. [inaudible 00:11:33.313] a little bit of a good idea. So we got the whole back out. I'm just gonna push it in and down. Apply good pressure all the way around, just a bit of a sealed deal. Now on the front, like I told you before, peel this off, and I think holding it out a little bit helps get that tape started. It's really close to the body, already [inaudible 00:12:20.429]. And this one here. Then we push it down, get that out of the way. And firmly press all the tape down. Okay, and the last one, the other side. So it helps you pull out on the wing just a little bit, the spoiler. Get that started. Just kind of pulled out on it. And then we're going to push it back down to our tape line, like so. [inaudible 00:13:05.192] Our tape is very helpful. It reminds you where you need to be. So after you press everything in, make sure it's good and firm, the gaps are great. And that's it, you're installed.Jake: That's gonna wrap it up here for our review and install of the Air Design Tailgate Spoiler in Satin Black, fitting 2021 and newer F-150s without the tailgate step.
